Considerations on Study in the US

Considerations on Studying in the US

1. Good english. The English score requirements for foreigners who want to study in the US are:

- TOEFL score 500 -530 (70-75) for secondary school.

- TOEFL score 550 (79-80) for undergraduate study

- TOEFL score 570 (86-87) for master's degree or higher in university.

A top rank university requires TOEFL score 630 (109) or higher.

If the TOEFL score is lower than the requirement, you can select a private school but its tuition fees are higher.

2. Find the right school that is a good fit for your grade point of average or behavior. That is, you may want to work part-time when studying or you may not be a diligent student.

3. Look at your financial status. Calculate the monthly and annual expenses including the study costs, living costs, travel expenses and pocket money. Find out if you study in an institution, will there be enough time and opportunity to work temporarily? But do not forget that the work will reduce the ability to learn. If you have a student visa, you can work temporarily during the school semester and full time otherwise, but that must be priorly approved by an international student counselor (not too difficult to negotiate because most of them are kind). All work will be 12 months in total for all students, either during the study or after graduation. However, the work time will be 24 months for students in science, technology, engineering and maths fields.

4. See the admission requirements of the school. Typically, there are TOEFL requirements, but almost all institutions have SAT requirements for undergraduate admission, but that can be avoided by attending a college for 1-2 years and then doing good grade for transferring to a university. GMAT score is needed for entry into a graduate study in business administration and so is GRE for a student wanting to fetch a Ph.D.

5. Submit the application form together with supporting documents. Hand in the I-20 when applying for a student visa at the US Embassy. There will be an interview there.

6. Prepare to travel after getting a student visa.

The expense of studying in the US is about Bt0.8- 1.1 million per year. That is for the tuition, housing and living fees excluding the traveling.
